Basic Purpose of the role
Responsible for rendering professional nursing care to patients within an assigned unit of the hospital, ensuring that nursing care is an integral part of the total patient care plan, working in conjunction with the medical staff and according to policies and procedures of the hospital. This will be in keeping with the accepted principles of professional nursing practice.
Key responsibilities of the role
Managerial/Administration
Manages clinical and operational activities at ward level and ensure the provision of optimum clinical care, customer satisfaction and patient safety. Demonstrate ability to adapt to varied age-specific patient populations.
Maintains an effective rapport with patients, visitors, physicians, and other member of the hospital team.
Promotes confidentiality and uses complete discretion when discussing information.
Works collaboratively with other staff members to provide continuous service to the organisation.
Ability to express self in the areas of communication verbal, written and non-verbal.
Demonstrates knowledge of current computer system used in the organisation.
Demonstrates adherence to safety and risk management policies as evidenced by in-service attendance records and employee practices.
Ensures the reporting of all adverse events, incidents and near misses.
Contributes to investigations of complaints and incidents and draft responses as required in a timely manner.
Contributes to the monitoring of key performance indicators and developing action plans as required
Technical
Responsible for the implementation and delivery of age appropriate patient care congruent with the mission, vision and values of the organisation.
Undertake comprehensive and holistic assessment of the patients nursing care needs.
Develops a plan of care, which is evidence based and planned in partnership with the patient wherever possible.
Collaborates with nursing staff and multidisciplinary teams on effective patient management ensure appropriate and timely interventions for patients and for discharge planning.
Documents patient assessment findings, physical/psychosocial responses to nursing intervention.
Provides a comprehensive clinical handover / report as required to ensure patient safety using SBAR principles.
Establish priorities of care, nursing actions and desired outcomes in a timely manner.
Performs required clinical procedures competently and ensures competencies are current as outlined in the Clinical Competency Framework
Attends meetings pertinent to department.
Acts as shift coordinator as required.
Reports unsafe practice to the nurse in charge.
Performs appropriate treatments as ordered by physician in an accurate and timely manner.
Provides care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to the patient’s and family diversity, preserving their autonomy, dignity and rights.
Reports patient’s condition to appropriate medical personnel during each shift.
Educates patients on health risk factors.
Uses the nursing process in the promotion of patient holistic health and wellbeing.
Uses ward resources such as dressings and clinical items in a cost effective and responsible manner
Other responsibilities
Quality & Safety
Participates as assigned on committees, working groups and other organization activities. Communicates with patient care team ongoing changes in patient’s plan of care and unit activity.
Education
Contributes to product evaluation at unit levels and participates in trials related to new product lines as appropriate.
Acts as a preceptor to less experienced staff as required.
Patient and family teaching as required.
Actively participates in organisational change in a constructive manner.
Actively participates in the Clinical Competency Programme.
Actively participates in the process for ensuring the organisation achieves and maintains JCIA status.
Engages in health promotion activities in the organization and community.
Responsible for educating less experienced staff in adverse drug reaction and the process to be followed for medication errors.
Qualifications, Certifications and Experience
Qualifications
Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing
Maintains valid, current RN licensure from own country.
BLS, certified.
Certified proof of yearly CME.
Specialist Certifications
Specialist Nursing certifications such as Critical Care Nursing or Paediatric Nursing is advantageous.
Experience Required in addition to the Qualifications mentioned above (Relevant to the Job)
Minimum of 2 years clinical experience.
International accreditation experience is an advantage.
